"I researched places in Alaska on the internet for a long time. It (Zachar Bay) was my favorite. Now that I've been there, it's definitely my favorite!"
 ~Rudy J Ramirez, Jr.

Anchorage to Kodiak:

The first step to your Kodiak adventure is getting to Alaska! Several airlines provide daily service into Anchorage from various cities around the world. Alaska Airlines provides reliable and comfortable service from numerous locations from the lower 48 to Anchorage. Kodiak is provided airline service from Anchorage by Alaska Airlines and Ravn, which fly a combined seven flights per day. Alaska Airlines has two flights with a Boeing 737 Jet while Ravn has at least five flights per day utilizing a Dash 8 aircraft.

The flight from Anchorage to Kodiak takes between 45 minutes to an hour and if you sit on the right side of the aircraft you can view the town of Kodiak on the final approach. The mountains rise from the ocean and the fog often skirts the ocean and land below where the small city of Kodiak lays. Once the plane has landed, you will deplane at the Alaska Airlines terminal building. Welcome to Kodiak where the lifestyle becomes more informal and the pace slower.

Kodiak to Zachar Bay:

To most visitors, the City of Kodiak can seem remote and isolated. Zachar Bay Lodge is located only 50 miles to the southwest of the City, but there are NO roads. The Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge covers almost 2/3 of Kodiak Island, preserving the land to our nature oriented adventures. The Lodge is only accessible by a 40-minute floatplane ride through the scenic bays and mountains that make up Kodiak Island. Don’t worry about setting up reservations for the flight to Zachar Bay – we include it in our packages.

Zachar Bay Lodge’s planes also operate as Kingfisher Aviation (907) 486-5155. Someone from the Lodge will meet you outside the Alaska Air terminal or your hotel when you arrive into Kodiak. (Look for Zachar Bay Lodge or Kingfisher name and logo on a hat or shirt). You will be taken by van to Trident Basin seaplane harbor, where the floatplane will depart for Zachar Bay.

Once the floatplane arrives at Zachar Bay Lodge it will taxi up and stop on the beach where you will be greeted by the staff. After your arrival your luggage will be taken to your room where you can unpack and prepare for the days excursion!

History

Started in the early 1900's as a salmon cannery, our facility is one of the few remaining reminders of Kodiak Island's rich fishing history. The large dock and cannery has gone many changes over the years, turning to herring processing, salmon roe, and now a Wilderness Lodge for your enjoyment.

Setting

Sitting on 7 acres of private land surrounded by the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. only accessible by floatplane or boat,, Zachar Bay is truly a gem in the wilderness. Our deep-water dock and beachfront location is truly something spectacular to experience.

Season

Join us from June through Mid September for your Alaskan adventure for our full service tours and accomodations. Also available is cabin rentals from October into December for fall do-it-yourself hunting.

Climate

Kodiak Island has a strong marine influence that dictates the weather and climate. There is little or no freezing weather, moderate precipitation, occasional high winds, and frequent cloud cover and fog. During the summer months (June, July, August and September) the low temperature rarely dips below 40 degrees and the high temperatures may reach the mid 70’s. Average temperature is 55 degrees.

During the longest day of the year – June 21 – Kodiak receives approximately 20.5 hours of light with darkness beginning at 12:31AM and ending at 3:48AM. Keep in mind that this is the most extreme day, and that before and after June 21 that each day is about 10 minutes shorter.

Rain and wind are common weather phenomenon that we deal with on a daily basis. A good raincoat and windbreaker are a necessity on every days outing – even if there isn’t a cloud in the sky. The weather can change quickly here so it is a good idea to always be prepared.

What to Bring

We can outfit you with the necessary equipment to have a great trip. We provide raincoats and pants, spinning rods, halibut fishing rods, tackle and reels and boots. We also have fishing lures, flies and other common tackle available for sale at the Lodge. Many of our guests have their own fishing equipment and tackle and ask what they need to bring. Following are some suggested items to bring:

--Hip boots or Lightweight waders - We do not recommend any neoprene chest waders as walking long distances is difficult and hot. The lightweight breathable waders work well, but make sure that the boots you bring do not have metal cleats on the bottoms because they can cause damage to the floatplane's floats.

--Rain coat with hood and pants (or long rain coats that cover top of hip boots)

--Warm jacket, hat, gloves, and socks - bring layered clothing (as tee shirt, long sleeved shirt, vest, jacket, raincoat--so you can take it off-- if you get hot and put more on if you get cold.)

--Personal articles (toothbrush, comb, medicine, etc.)

--Flashlight and day pack
