Zachar Bay Lodge was established in 1989 by longtime Kodiak residents Marty & Linda Eaton as a wilderness destination for fishing and wildlife viewing adventures. Our multiple day vacations are designed to be fun, educational, safety-oriented, and to leave-no-trace on the environment while providing you a wonderful vacation. We have lived in Kodiak for many years, and we would like to share the beauty of the Alaska's Emerald Isle with you.

All trips are fully guided by highly experienced, professional guides. They are expertly trained in bear safety and have many years of first hand experience with the bears of Kodiak Island. Zachar Bay Lodge prides themselves in the kind of professionalism only long experience and solid education can bring. The lodge is proud to have a spotless safety record (for both guests and bears). Zachar Bay has an extensive and colorful history, started during the era of sailing ships and rowboats. The facility was originally built in the early 1900's as a salmon cannery, then converted to a herring reduction plant in the 1930's. The herring was stripped of rich oils and roe, and the remaining fish product was dried and turned into fish meal. This was a seasonal fishery, and Zachar Bay Fisheries would operate with over a hundred workers for a few months a year. As fisheries technology evolved (motorized vessels, ice machines, saltwater chillers), the need for high overhead, seasonal remote processing sites diminished. The 1960's was the end of the processing era for Zachar Bay, and the cannery remained mostly dormant (there were a few small stints at processing salmon roe) until 1989 when the Eaton's purchased the facility.
